At this year’s SEMA show, James Hetfield and car builder Rick Dore presented a custom 1936 Auburn Boat-Tail Speedster with a smoldering torch singer paint job and a name to match. Slow Burn. The 1936 Speedsters, model number 852, came with a 279 cubic-inch engine. Previous models sported a 12 cylinder engine but when that engine was dropped from the line, an existing 6 cylinder engine (which had been refitted for two more cylinders) was employed. For the time, the 115 horsepower engine was a monster. An additional 35 horses could be added with the Schwitzer-Cummings supercharger upgrade. Even from it’s humble beginnings as a hacked together motor, the Auburn could speed to over 100 MPH.<br />
